Lately I have been quite vociferous on the topic of "pseudo-spiritualism", having talked about it in a guest post Erica Suter's Blog. I also touched on it during the second episode of the Brooklyn Strong Podcast reboot. Needless to say, it irks me....read on. ******* I'm going to put it out there the the biggest pitfall to coaching or leadership of ANY kind is doing it for the wrong reasons. There are plenty of valid reasons for seeking to lead people, but there are DEFINITELY wrong ones, … [Read more...] about On Pseudo-Spiritualism and Coaching
I've been out of the Social Media and Blogging game for a while, now. I left because I was just nauseated by so many of these so-called “FitPros”, but I have something to say, so I'm going to poke my head up for bit before I go back to being a Clinic Director and focusing my time on improving the workplace, mentoring my staff, and not doing anything dumb enough to get me fired. You see, I gotta be honest about something: Alan Aragon doesn't piss me off half as much as some of you do. … [Read more...] about Where Were You?
So I have this really spacious office with shelves and knick-knacks and two chairs that face my desk so that people can come in and have meetings with me and whatnot. I'm the "Director of Clinical Services." Allegedly I "direct" things. I have a staff of 50+. I also have a business card. Like Patrick Bateman. Mine is blue and white. It suggests that I "direct" things. Sometimes I wonder if some sort of mistake has been made and, frankly, I'm waiting for them to send in someone larger than me to … [Read more...] about This much I know…
What can we learn from this? Hear me out: I made about three mistakes before I finished my first cup of coffee. Five mistakes before my second cup, and the act of actually drinking the second cup was mistake six. I fucked up at least seven evolutions before lunch, and I failed about a dozen times by my evening commute. It's likely I'll dick-up a few more times before I get to the sheets tonight...possibly four or five times while I'm actually asleep. If I wake up on the floor, I'll update … [Read more...] about What can we learn from this?
Okay, so listen, do you know what you need? What you need and what you WANT are most likely not going to be the same things. At least acutely they aren't. And I don't particularly care what domain we are referencing here: personal development, education, fitness, etc. If you take a look at your goals, there are things you are going to NEED to do to get there, and I'd be willing to bet that there are more than a few of them that you don't WANT to do. Sure, I mean, there are plenty of things … [Read more...] about What you need…
The secret to self-awareness is that there isn't one. I either have your complete attention now, or I have lost you, which means that this post wasn't for you to begin with. Bye. For those of you still with me... The cornerstone of my coaching (and my massage and bodywork, for that matter) involves working with a client to drive self-awareness. While studying Sport Psychology, I learned a ton about Motivation Theory, Goal-Setting, Optimal Arousal Levels. All that good stuff. The problem: … [Read more...] about The Self-Awareness Secret
I had a friend of mine look over my resume the other day. The word he used to describe it was “impressive”. Practical leadership of hundreds of people. Check. Practical exercise programming and implementation/administration for departments of over 300 personnel. Check. Multiple military schools and other non-military degrees. Check License in Manual Therapy. Check, Too many certs to remember (some more worthless than others). Check. My response: I had to laugh. I … [Read more...] about My Resume
How do you get good at something? Hold on. Let’s get back to that in a bit. I reached the point, a few months back, where things just stopped making sense to me in terms of the direction I was going with my career in the fitness industry (if you could call it that). I was restless and felt stagnant. I needed to step back and take stock of what was going on with me, internally. At the time, I was affiliated with some coaching groups that required me to be on Facebook often. In my gut, this … [Read more...] about Going Deep
As a husband, what do you do when your wife gets raped? I'm sorry if I fucked your day up with this. Her and I were both active duty and the Navy was sorting out our co-location, so I was running around the USS Carl Vinson in San Diego as the G-1 Division Leading Chief, while she was floating around on the USS Harry S. Truman as a Storekeeper (2nd Class). In hindsight, I knew something was "off". We would talk as much as was practical when one half of a relationship is deployed, but the emails … [Read more...] about Her, too…
